Should I Expect Grade Decline Questions?

Post by Anonymous User » Thu Jun 12, 2014 5:36 pm

Go to a CCN. Finished the year with really strong grades--enough to qualify for our school's highest academic honor. However, my grades declined significantly second semester--went from all As/A equivalents first semester to mix of A, A-, B+ second semester.

So, due to the decline in my grades, should I expect questions from firms as to what happened? Or will they just look at overall GPA and not care? And, if I do get questions about that issue, how should I answer them?

Thanks much for help. Realize this post is a bit humblebraggy and I apologize for that, but it would be good to know if I should expect questions along those lines.

Related question in the alternative: Any any to leverage a significant increase in grades (e.g., 3.4 Fall to 3.7 spring, leading to 3.55 cumulative) between semesters?

I wouldn't expect any. Two years ago at MVP, first semester was all A-s except one A+, good for probably top 2%, and second semester was all A-s except one B+. Out of all my interviews, I received one question about the B+, and it was in jest. Unless it's a profound drop off, and yours isn't, firms are about overall. There's enough semester-to-semester variation to not really care, unless you pulled a random B- or something.

I similarly had only one out of many interviewers ask about a grade discrepancy (it was at Cravath—maybe they care more). I don't think I answered it well, so no advice about how to handle it.

But probably don't need to worry too much.

That doesn't seem like that significant of a decrease. Sounds more like regression to the mean as opposed to you legitimately screwing up.

I had almost a perfect GPA in the fall and a much steeper fall in the spring (slightly below avg) and ended up around top third. Think it will be more of an issue?
