Smaller satellite office as a first year
Specifically comparing a satellite in a secondary market vs. a big firm in NYC. Wondering if it's better or worse to be in a satellite office vs. a huge firm office as a young attorney. Seems like you might get more substantive work early on. Also seems like maybe there's a kind of "safety in numbers" element of being at a big firm HQ, so there would be less attention on you if you make mistakes and stuff. I know there is less of a chance making partner, etc, but not too worried about that because lol @ making partner anyway...

One thing you have to consider is the partners that produce the work at the satelite. I picked my firm because my mentor at the firm I'm at gave me this anecdote. He was at a satellite. There were 60 attorney's most in litigation. For two years the big case at that time was lead pain litigation. That is all he got work on for two years because that was all the work in the office. He left and went to a firm down the street that was hq'd in the secondary.
I personally picked hq secondary> big firm NYC, but that was a personal choice. Still would ahve probably went satellite over big firm NYC.

Yeah this office generates it's own work locally and specializes in a sector of the economy that is big in this market. Which brings up another concern--that I won't have as much of a choice In what I specialize in as an attorney. Not 100% sure what kind of law I want to practice and the bigger offices seem to offer more options.

I would go with a bigger office. If you just want a reduction in hours from NYC your still going to get that in a secondary market. I just really believe that you are going to have more options work wise if you go to a hq in atlanta or st. louis or something rather than Weil's 18th biggest office. I know its tempting to be able to say that your going to a V10, but those rankings will only impress your law school friends not the people that matter most, which are the attorney's in your desired market.
