Quality of work for 1L summer internship.

Post by Connor Benz » Thu May 29, 2014 7:24 pm

What type of work do employers usually give summer 1Ls? The guy in my office who designates assignments to interns was gone for a few days and I found myself twiddling my thumbs. However, a few other interns are still working on things - while I have nothing to do now. I'm concerned. I turned in some work earlier this week, but haven't heard a follow up like the person told me they were going to do. Being that I was so nervous, I overlooked something and I had a typo in the document  I mean, what can I do? Its only my second week.

This is totally normal- no need to freak out. (1) 1Ls are virtually useless in practice (myself included when I was a 1L... it's alright, nobody expects you to know anything), (2) even 2L SAs end up with gaps of nothingness, especially near the start of the summer, and (3) if you want feedback, find ways to tactically press for it.

They'll probably just make you parter come August.

I work in the same capacity at a small firm, and was surprised to see stuff I wrote for a high-profile appellate brief proceed unedited to the final copy filed with the state supreme court. I don't know if that makes it a common experience but I was surprised to see it anyhow.

Matters. My 1L year I was the sole intern at a relatively small US Attorney's office and a face in the crowd at a megacity US Attorney's office.

At the relatively small office I was always busy and a lot of stuff I did ended up in briefs, motions, indictments, etc. At the big office, I was way more useless and ended up twiddling my thumbs a lot.
