Hey all, I have a local gov't agency position lined up for this summer, starting beginning of June. However, I just received an offer from a small firm (~20 attorneys), which is paid. Not quite sure if the firm offers a post grad employment possibility, but some of the attorneys at the firm previously worked as law clerks there. Also, the firm has multiple practices areas which I'm interested in. No interest in gov't work. Both jobs are in the market I want to be in. T2 with average grades, so I feel like I need to take any job that offers any chance at post grad work. However, I feel bad that I would be withdrawing from the gov't agency so late and that they most likely won't have time to fill the open position now.
Thanks in advance.

Answer's pretty easy, go with the firm. Since you're at a T2 and have avg grades, who knows if you'll have another shot at a firm. If you don't work at a firm in law school, the chance of getting a firm job after graduation is low. Plus it's paid and seems like you would be way more interested in the firm. Part of being a lawyer entails burning bridges at some point in your career and you just need to move on from it.

This advice only applies to biglaw. Working at a 20-person firm your 1L year isn't going to get you any sort of good chances at a permanent job.ran12 wrote:Answer's pretty easy, go with the firm. This is tough but I would lean toward sticking with where you're at. Depends to some degree on what the market is (i.e. if it's NYC then having some local agency blacklist you isn't a big deal, if it's Tulsa, maybe).

Dump the agency and take the paycheck and possibility of post-grad employment. You want to do what this firm does and have no interest in government work? Why is this even a question?
