Asking to go from Full Summer to Half
Hello guys,
I recently got a summer position that is supposed to last the entire summer. However, as I was waiting on the offer from this position I ended up taking a RA position as well. I was wondering how do I go about requesting that I want to work for half the summer instead of the full summer? Or should I just work both positions for the entire summer? Thanks!

Work both or just do the firm
Don't give up time at the firm and piss people off (potentially) for a shitty RA position

Op here - it's actually a legal internship with the local government if that makes any difference

Any chance of an offer of post-grad employment?Anonymous User wrote:Op here - it's actually a legal internship with the local government if that makes any difference

I don't think I'd ever do a split with an RA gig. Maybe if the professor was a total hot shot and there was zero chance of post-grad employment from the other employer, but even then people are probably still going to give you the side eye when you tell them you split with an RA.

Op here, so how do I go about telling the prof. I can no longer be a RA? He practices in a field I'm really interested in and don't wanna seem like a total jerk

This is a good point, since most of the time RAing is just like 15 hours a week of research at your convenience.hous wrote:Why cant you do both?Anonymous User wrote:Op here, so how do I go about telling the prof. The same thing happened to me for my 1L summer. The agency let me go part-time that summer. Since I did good work when I was there, everyone was fine with it. However, if they had held firm at full-time, I still would have done both. I could have done almost all of my RA stuff on nights and weekends and been fine.

If your not getting paid in a local gov job that has 0% chance of employment after graduation, you should split and at least get some money. Resume will just say "summer 2014" anyway. You'll get over the "side eye" from the local gov employer.mushybrain wrote:I don't think I'd ever do a split with an RA gig.
