Best Firms in LA for Going In House
Hi all,
I would like to please solicit advice re: the best firms in LA for moving in house. Preferably in house in really anything outside of life sciences. Are there go-to firms for transitioning in house in LA like Wilson Sonsini is for the Bay Area?
Just curious as I plan which firms to target. Thanks!

I'd also add O'Melveny to the list.zweitbester wrote:Probably Latham moreso than any of those...Anonymous User wrote:Munger/Irell/GibsonAnonymous User wrote:Hi all,

It totally depends on the industry/firm you want to target and whether or not the firm practices with that industry.
The firms mentioned above are the big/prestigious firms in LA that have substantial corporate practices (though MTO, and Irell to a lesser extent, focus more prominently on litigation). If you're interviewing with any of these firms, ask about their major repeat clients and extrapolate from there.

Considering that corporate tends to make it easier to transition in-house and Munger/Irell are heavily litigation focused, not sure how you came up with this list.

My bad, figured those are the three most sought after LA firms --> best exists, even if we're talking about in-house. Could be wrong, feel free to correct.bk1 wrote:watigo2northwestern wrote:Munger/Irell/Gibson

TBF, it was a pretty ignorant thing to say, especially in such a definitive tone (inasmuch as tone exists on the internet) when you had no real basis for saying it.

Re: Best Firms in LA for Going In House
To try and answer OP's questions:
There's not going to be a definitive list of firms to exit into in-house. Exit options vary from practice group to practice group and even more than that, the path that any given attorney takes is going to vary because the opportunities available to each attorney will vary. I think the important question is, what do you want to go in-house doing? Answer that then aim for the practice groups that do that sort of thing, and then choose firms based on those practice groups. For example, it wouldn't make sense to pick a corporate practice group (e.g. tech transactions) just because it gives you more opportunities to go in-house if you actually dislike corporate work and prefer litigation. Just wanting to work for a random type of corporation at some point down the road in some legal capacity is too nebulous a desire to base firm choice off of.

OP, if you're considering lit, Munger/Irell are as good as it gets. They're gold standard, and not just for SoCal. Latham/Gibson would be my guess for corporate --> in house tracks.

Re: Best Firms in LA for Going In House
not OP but for someone who wants to go in-house at big entertainment/media company (like Universal, WB, Disney, etc.) which LA firms are best? not sure lit/trans since it seems like trans seems to be more the norm in-house anyway.
already have grades/connections/school/resume for it, just want to position strongly for OCI.

Re: Best Firms in LA for Going In House
FWIW, litigators in LA regularly exit to media/entertainment companies. You probably should have a copyright/media lit background to make this happen. I know a number of folks from my firm have gone this route.
