Ok to put SA on resume before starting?
When random people ask me to send them a resume at this time, is ok to put the SA position I will have this summer (starting in may) on my resume? I feel like it carries a lot of weight on a resume and I don't want someone to think less of me just because I happened to send him my resume 3 weeks before I actually started my summer associateship

Do it. Just put June - July 2014 or whatever the dates are and they'll understand.

Related nitpicking question (but this is TLS): okay to put your SA firm on your LinkedIn profile now even if your not starting work for another month? You might say this is dumb, but it definitely helps people you network with find you

I think this is weird and you don't really see people do it. I'd generally avoid it.Anonymous User wrote:Related nitpicking question (but this is TLS): okay to put your SA firm on your LinkedIn profile now even if your not starting work for another month? 100% this. Though I think the people at my school who received the most criticism were those who immediately updated their fb.rad lulz wrote:TcrJchance wrote:Your classmates will most likely hate u if u do this.Anonymous User wrote:Related nitpicking question (but this is TLS): okay to put your SA firm on your LinkedIn profile now even if your not starting work for another month? It is fine to put the information on both your resume and Linkedin so long as it is clear it is an upcoming position.
If anyone from your law school gives you grief, shame on both of you -- them because that is what LinkedIn is for (it's not Facebook and upcoming positions while in law school can be a relevant part of your profile), and you (and them) for connecting with them prior to graduation (connecting with current colleagues is generally a bad idea, though in the work setting can't always be avoided -- I can't tell you the number of times I've gotten a heads up that someone I work with is interviewing by seeing the changes they make to LinkedIn).

Right. I'm not socially insensitive. That's why I haven't put it up on Linkedin or FB or really told more than the friends that directly asked about it since after winter break. I was only asking now since it's so close to starting, everyone has a summer job now anyway & will be putting up summer employers within the next month regardless. But ill wait till I actually start. I don't think linkedin is that big of a deal since you likely aren't friends with nearly as many people from your law school on LinkedIn as you are on fb. Plus the purpose of LinkedIn is basically an online resume, so it at least belongs within that forum. Still, it's possible people will look down on it.
IMO it's weird to update fb with summer jobs in general, since it's not exactly a professional networking tool and you don't know for certain you will be with that employer for more than 10 weeks. I don't put any of that information on fb though.

I never post anything about law school accomplishments/job on FB, but every time I tell my mom about something good, she inevitably tags me in a status announcing whatever I just told her. I don't have the heart to tell her to stop.

I think you should absolutely put any of your summer jobs on your LinkedIn, but only once you've gotten a few weeks into the job. Doing so before you start is just tacky and weird.

Facebook? Probably Not.
Linkedin? I don't see the harm.
Overall - I don't think you need to stress to much over it. Not something that is going to make a difference in the grand scheme of things.

I KNEW I wasn't the only one who objected to people blowing their load on a Facebook status on the grounds that it was inconsiderate.
I'd tell peers, "Maybe be a bit more considerate to your unemployed or rejected friends before posting 'HARVARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!' in a status." I would invariably be accused of jealousy.
TLS--you're good people.

I don't see the harm in posting this to linkedin. I updated my 1L linkedin profile with my summer job. It is your professional platform. I think it would take an extremely sensitive to get upset about this. Especially since 1L summer jobs aren't a sensitive subject in re employment.

Agreed about Linkedin. It's Facebook that really irks me (and yes, I did disable my account).Anonymous User wrote:Phil Brooks wrote:^This.Regulus wrote:Unsurprisingly, people in my class were posting their 1L summer jobs on their LinkedIn profiles as soon as they got them last year in November~December. But for argument's sake, even with Linkedin, I think if you updated your profile in June, then plausibly you did it for the professional purpose of getting a head start on OCI networking. But If you did it in November and December, then it was purely for boasting. Putting a forthcoming summer job in November or December serves no professional purpose.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
