Ask 1L SA firm to split? (Now 2L)

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Mar 31, 2014 6:43 pm

Hello everyone. Usual contributor here now seeking some insight.

I just found out my upcoming 2L SA firm only had a 76% offer rate for its summers last year, where historically they have been about 95-100%. This kind of concerns me because at the end of the day, I want that 2L SA offer and I don't know if this is a sign of things to come.

I did a 1L SA at a large firm and received an offer to return as a 2L SA. I have been on good terms with attorneys at the 1L SA firm, and they have said to consider it an open line communication with them in the future. I really enjoyed the firm and I would not mind working there at all.

My 2L SA ends rather early (in July). Would it be the prudent play here to ask the 1L SA firm to go back for 2-3 weeks at the end of the summer, to maximize the chance that I come out of this in the best position possible--with an offer?

Some additional background info: I made the e-board of my flagship journal, and my class rank went up a bit (although I am afraid I will lose some ground this semester) in the fall.
