AG Office or Corporate firm? Need help

Post by strawhatt » Wed Mar 26, 2014 5:58 pm

I am in a bit of a predicament, I have been offered a position at the AG's office and have until the end of the week to accept the position. At the same time, I am expecting a call from a corporate office to possibly come in for an interview. I still haven't received the call from the corporate office yet. There is a slight chance that I will be getting the position at the firm, but its not guaranteed. Im also not sure whether I would be getting paid for the position either.

Now I'm stuck with a decision as to whether I should just accept the AG position for the summer, which would be a bit of a hassle to get to (1.5 hour commute)...OR, do I tell the AG office that I would decline and wait for the interview with the corporate office in hopes that I land a job there for the summer. I have until the end of the week and still haven't heard back from the corporate office (been waiting since monday).

- I would rather work for the corporate office. More of a career path I'm interested in pursuing
- My biggest issue is that I will run out of time before the end of the week coming to a decision on either one but do not know if I should go with the sure job or a maybe

Thanks in advance for any advice

Something like 4 people from my corporate firm already fled to the AG's office.

Really? Thats interesting. Thanks for the quick reply. Would you say that the AG office looks better on the resume than a corporate office summer position?

Always summer wherever you're gonna get a full time offer.

This is correct. If don't hear by the deadline from the firm (offer, not just an interview) and the AG won't extend your deadline, you should probably go ahead and accept it. Bird in hand. If the firm job ends up working out and is likely to lead to a full time offer, it may be worth reneging on the AG; if not, it probably doesn't matter which one you do.

Thanks. Im not sure if it will turn out to be a full time offer. Im a 1L...however, the company has ties with a firm i have worked with in the past and I may have the possibility of working with them out of law school, if I do solid work for them.

I'm not sure if by "Corporate Office" you mean a BigLaw Firm.

If it's not a BigLaw firm and it doesn't pay that well, then I'd take the AG's office. From what i've heard the AG's positions are pretty interesting work. But secondhand opinion, so who knows.

If you ARE speaking of BigLaw, then you have a bit more to think about. I had the exact same issue, but it was after the firm called me in for an interview. I felt good enough about the interview to gamble and turn down an offer (would have been my second choice). Few things I considered (which may or may not be relevant to you):

- A 1L SA position, i felt, was extremely valuable. Yes, the cash is nice, but there's a decent chance I'd have an offer to come back for 2L SA -> post-grad employment. The thought of potentially having an offer in my pocket before OCI was valuable to me.

- Interview: In your case, you haven't even had an interview yet. You need to careful assess how big your chances of getting this position is. Not just based on what they're saying (they'll always pamper you into thinking you're the greatest). But evaluate your application. How likely are you to get this? Be honest with yourself.

- How important is this AG's job to you? Most 1L summer position don't really matter for OCI and beyond. Is there a special reason you'd want to take this AG's job?

- How likely are you to get a different job? This is generally an easy answer: most 1Ls get a summer job (free labor!) and is largely not a concern.
