Excuse my ignorance...
Excuse my ignorance but does anyone know of any law jobs In particular that pay well but also help people? Both are VERY important to me. That being said I'll sacrifice the dough to help folks, but both would be pretty awesome.

Shit law lawyers help the common person.
In criminal defense, you help people fight the state
In personal injury, you help people get compensation for their injuries
In family law, you help people get theirs.
All these kinds of lawyers help people with their problems during difficult times in their lives.

I think I remember Worldtraveler saying that people in international human rights law make pretty good money. I know that those jobs are very difficult to get. I will try to find what she said exactly so I am not misquoting her.

This is from the "So you want to do PI" thread". Those jobs are probably super difficult to get though.worldtraveler wrote:Senior staff at my NGO make from 100k to 250k. They also fly all over the world all the time. We're really good at spending money.

I wanna make enough to pay off law school debt (let's say 300k$ for the hell of it) in less than 5 years. I don't honestly even know if that's reasonable.
And I want to help people, as in, the little guy. Maybe along the lines of stopping human trafficking or some other crazy world injustice.

Re: Excuse my ignorance...
I'm assuming that when OP said pay well, he/she didn't want "shit-law" suggestions. I would describe well paid as being able to support a family and pay off loans within 10 years, but that's just me. Of course that would vary from city to city because of COL.Nova wrote:Define "pay well"Anonymous User wrote:

Edit: My definition of well-paid is a little more modest than OP.

My definition is similar to yours.johnnyquest wrote:Edit: My definition of well-paid is a little more modest than OP.
Im pretty sure that if you go into sticker debt at a T14, and want to help people who can not afford legal services, youre almost certainly going to have to do a public interest loan forgiveness programstef1330 wrote:I wanna make enough to pay off law school debt (let's say 300k$ for the hell of it) in less than 5 years. You wanna make 300k total over 5 years or 300k a year? 300k a year is not going to happen dude, not even likely to happen in a firm.stef1330 wrote:I wanna make enough to pay off law school debt (let's say 300k$ for the hell of it) in less than 5 years. You will not stop human trafficking nor will you make money at it, at least not for the first 20 years. If you care about money, don't go into public interest law. Go to a firm and do some pro bono while donating some money.

Profile says boy. Also you have to consider that PSLF may not be around when it is time for you to use it, or may be completely different.Nova wrote:stef is probably a girl, right?

Not saying it will happen but something to consider. Also investigate LRAP programs.

Re: Excuse my ignorance...
What do you mean by stopping human trafficking? Like actually putting an end to it or working for a non-profit doing T and U-Visa and asylum cases? Prosecuting HT cases?
Do you have experience in that type of work?

Yea I didn't mean I plan on definitively ending human trafficking single handedly. I'm not Clark kent. I just want to do something that helps human trafficking victims, or any victimized people.

You're a 0L and shouldn't be posting here. But if you want this kind of job it helps to go to HYS and get as much exposure and experience in these kinds of organizations as soon as possible. Try to intern at places like that right now, as it will demonstrate your interest in these kinds of extremely competitive positions. I mean, do you think you're relatively unique in wanting to make a lot of money while making a difference?stef1330 wrote: Yea I didn't mean I plan on definitively ending human trafficking single handedly. Public defenders in SF make a lot of money, but your chances of landing one of these positions is approximately 0.00000%.
