Conflicts check

Post by Anonymous User » Thu Mar 13, 2014 11:14 pm

I'm a 3L at a T50 doing a second interview for an experienced hire position at a big 4. Hiring is a bit different from most post-law school jobs, since I already have experience in this area, its a small niche area, and its not entry level. Also, I interviewed with multiple people at my first interview... but the job is for a different office, so I have to do this interview (over the phone) with a few people in that office.

I was asked to do a conflict of interests check. What does this mean in terms of their level of interest? Do firms only do conflict checks with people they know they want to hire? All the feedback so far has pointed to them being really interested, but I'm sort of hoping this is a sign that they are dead set on giving me the offer.

Thanks for your help!

Why do we need to know that you're at a top 50?

I think that you're reading too much Into this. It probably means that yea they're interested because they wouldn't ask you to do the check if they didn't care. It could also be completely standard protocol. Who knows. Just relax.

I used to run conflict checks for lateral attorney hiring. In regards to your question, it is probably not a sign that they are dead set on giving you the offer. Probably just standard procedure between first and second interviews for experienced hires. I wouldn't read anything into it beyond the fact that you have a second interview.

How will your response affect her life in any way, let alone in a positive way?

Maybe the OP won't get too optimistic if it is just a routine procedure, and then won't get too disappointed if rejected. Or maybe the optimism will be beneficial regardless of the outcome. I don't know. But I'm pretty sure that responses like yours or gdane's "just relax" aren't super constructive and are unlikely to be followed, even if OP wanted to.
