CB/offer % for judicial clerks

Post by clashjones87 » Tue Mar 11, 2014 7:13 pm

Is the offer to CB ratio the same for judicial clerks as it is for OCI applicants? I'm thinking specifically of Williams & Connolly, though I'd be curious about litigation firms in general too. I ask because I'm unsure how many interviews I should aim to schedule.

Thanks.

At my firm, the offer to callback ratio is lower for judicial clerks than for OCI candidates. Some possible explanations for this: (1) clerk callbacks are based solely on paper record while OCI callbacks are based on paper record plus a screening interview, so for OCI candidates, the people who are terrible interviewers are screened out. (2) the OCI recruiting season is a total madhouse, so the firm tries to avoid excessive callbacks, while the recruiting season for clerks is a little more relaxed. (3) offers to OCI candidates are for summer jobs so, at least in theory, if the person is a disaster, you don't need to give them a full-time offer, while offers to clerk candidates are full-time offers.

Do you mind if I ask if you have a CB at W&C?

Different anon here- I'm a clerk that was hired off cycle (clerkship ends in December). Would some firms likely come back to the clerk pool later in the year if they had an uptick in work? Some people have advised me that it's too early to begin looking now and I should wait to apply when firms might have a more immediate need for bodies.

If you're clerking now and will finish your clerkship at the end of December, you should be looking now (and really should have been looking a month ago). Late winter/early spring is prime judicial clerk recruiting season. "On cycle" clerks typically aren't starting at law firms until the October/November time frame, so if you'll be available to start in the December/January time frame, firms will consider you with the rest of the clerk pool. At my firm, anyway, there is no "supplemental" clerk recruiting season, so if you miss this one, you're out of luck.

Thanks, I've been looking already but perhaps halfheartedly, since I've been getting conflicting messages from people.
