What is diverse?

Post by Anonymous User » Sat Mar 08, 2014 9:26 pm

After reading much about 1L SA hiring, it seems like most of the positions are through "diversity-based" hiring, but I couldnt find any definition on what exactly is diverse?

Are we talking about race?

If so, are we talking AA, MA only like how URM is considered for law schools? Or are we basically talking anyone that is not mid-20s white guy? Or is this extremely firm-dependent?

Go to a law firm website. See if they talk about how diverse they are, and take a look at what they describe as diversity.

For example, http://www.skadden.com/diversity/recruiting

How about this ?

"mcguirewoods defines diversity broadly to include age, sex, gender identity, race, ethnicity, national origin, disability, religion, sexual orientation, marital status and veteran status, as well as educational and professional backgrounds."

Remember, kids, if everybody is diverse, then nobody is diverse.

Diverse is whatever they can tell their clients that it is in order to get their diversity points without their clients laughing them out of the building.

Remember, these places are businesses.

I am still bit confused, so is diversity what the firm make it to be? Or is it race-based mostly? Because from my understanding the SEO internships are strictly race-based.

It's mostly race but also gender and sexual orientation, to lesser extent. Being black is "more diverse" than being Asian, but being Asian is "more diverse" than being female, etc. When they do their diversity tally each year, they'll probably count every person of even slight color and LGBTQ in their diversity statistics, but not all of those people would have been seriously considered for a diversity 1L SA.

SEO is different from firms' 1L summer positions.
