Help me decide what I will practice

Post by Anonymous User » Sun Mar 02, 2014 5:38 pm

I have three offers. One if doing bankruptcy representing creditors, another is doing foreclosures for creditors, and the third is doing insurance defense. They all pay roughly the same and i'm indifferent about the jobs.

I go to a lower T1 and am in top 1/3. I have zero litigation or civil procedure experience and all three jobs are just that.

I realize this is a no good option scenario, but what would be best for future career movements?

I'd say bankruptcy but that's, in part, because it's been my favorite class so far in law school.

I also think it has the most upside for career development. Could you be a little more specific about the practice?

Foreclosures would probably just be rubber stamping things, but there is probably some money there if you could pick up your own clients. I'm not sure about insurance.

Bankruptcy. Foreclosures sounds really depressing, and insurance defense is miserable by all accounts. And big firms do bankruptcy whereas I'm not sure about the others, so I bet that's the most upwardly mobile, if that matters to you.

Bk sounds the least miserable

Don't make a choice based on "upward mobility"

If you're past 2L OCI the big law ship has almost assuredly sailed

Bankruptcy work is not bad at all.

Depends upon the type of practice in each area. It's between bankruptcy & insurance defense, in my opinion. Unless it's a sophisticated bankruptcy practice--Chapter 11 work as opposed to individual consumer debt--then insurance defense would be better. Consumer bankruptcy work can be done by paralegals with an attorney signature & is often filed without any legal representation but with layperson assistance in identifying & filling out the proper forms. Onthe other hand, insurance defense tends to be contractually based litigation.

There is a lot of money to be made in consumer bankruptcy though. I'm sure it's not the most exciting work if you're just doing a bulk practice.
