Fed judge intern in the fall?

Post by AlanShore » Fri Feb 28, 2014 10:46 am

I had an interview with a federal judge but I declined because I accepted a 1L SA. Do judges hire fall interns? If so what is the time line for that? Would it be odd for me to ask the same judge if she would consider me for a fall part time internship?

Judges often hire interns during the school year, and it's perfectly appropriate to ask if the judge would consider that as an option. Some judges might be less interested in having a part time intern, or may set a minimum number of hours, or the judge may have something going on in the fall that would make it a bad time to have an intern, but you can certainly ask.

Ditto this, but also check with your school first to see if you can get credit for a judicial externship and, if so, what that process is (if you can make your own arrangements with a judge or if you're assigned).

I know a guy in my section who did this. It was his way of saying no to a judge without saying no. Not fed though.

Judges definitely hire fall externs. The real question is if your school will give you credit for it. For example, I externed for a federal judge this past fall, and I received 4 credits for it by doing my school's judicial practicum course along with it. Another school in my city has no such program and offers no credit for judicial externships. Both T14.

On a separate but related note, the externship was an amazing, invaluable experience. Your research and writing skills will infinitely improve. I highly recommend it.
