Hey guys...I have two offers that I am deciding between - The Office of the New York State Attorney General and a US District Court judge for the Eastern District of NY. I am not entirely sure want I want to do career-wise but I think something corporate law-related (have an MBA and several years of work experience). I also want to obtain a judicial clerkship upon graduation. I know the answer may seem obvious at this point, but there's more..

I will get guaranteed funding for the Attorney General position. The DC judge position could come with funding but that won't be known until a bit later.


Any advice? What would look better on my resume? What would you do if you were in my shoes? Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks!

District Court judicial internship

That experience would open up many more doors regardless of what you end up doing career-wise.

1L summer job? If so, there is no right/wrong choice here. Both legal, both somewhat prestigious. You will probably write more for the judge and that court will give you interesting business cases (or it should?). Sounds like you want to be a corporate lawyer so most likely you will want biglaw. Grades are more important than summer job, seriously. Unless you do something crazy or lazy your first summer, no one really cares.

OP here..Thanks for the feedback so far. I should also add the the AG position is with the Litigation Bureau.

I essentially want the position that benefits me more (both short term and long term). I understand that 1L jobs don't matter in the sense that any legal job is acceptable. Although the difference may slight, I having trouble which is better.

You'll probably do more interesting work for the AG than a judge.

Not really. Judicial internships are a dime a dozen and many judges won't make calls or write letters for interns bc they don't want to raise concerns ab partiality

Take the funded position

If you can get funding from both just do whatever seems more fun it don't really matter

Both are great opportunities for one's 1L Summer. If you need the money, then take the AG position with guaranteed funding; if not, then follow your instincts.

I was under the impression that you don't turn down federal clerkship offers unless 1) you have another judicial clerkship offer from a higher/sister court that you are accepting, or 2) you already accepted a different offer before the judge contacted you. Check if it is permissible with Career Services at your school. Some schools strictly enforce this.

1) This is an internship, not a clerkship offer.
2) You don't need "permission" from CSO
3) Enforce how? Time-out, dirty looks, a light spanking? Nothing will happen.
4) Be polite and life will go on.

Especially since the judge clearly gave the OP time to accept the offer. I think judges that expect you not to turn them down tend to give exploding offers; if they give you time to think about it, they generally expect you actually to be making a choice, not going through a pointless ritual.

Also, OP, I'd do the paid AG position and extern for a judge during the semester.

OP here. I thought about going the extern route but I don't go to school in the NYC area so extorting there will be presumably quite tough, right?
