Writing comp while starting SA

Post by Anonymous User » Tue Feb 25, 2014 8:58 am

I was offered an SA for this summer (1L). My last final ends May 17th (Fri) and my SA begins May 19th (Monday). Anyone ever try to do the writing comp while doing an SA..? Am I screwed or is it doable?

Also, I'm not sure what the etiquette is for SA timelines but can I ask if I can delay my start a few days (2-3) and make it up at the end? or is this something I definitely shouldnt ask?

Thanks!

I'm in the same situation. My writing competition is during the first week of my SA and I have to be at school for the first two days of the competition. I told my firm, and they said it'd be fine if I started the week after. They told me it might be possible to start mid-week if I wanted, but I felt like that might be a little too hectic. Basically, just ask the recruiting contact at your firm. They should be able to guide you.

Lots of people deal with this every year. (Think of the Chicago people who don't get out of class till June...) It's a drag, in that you have to a) spend the weekend after finals/before SA doing the write-on, b) do the write-on at night after work, or c) both. But it's doable. (It's usually for a fairly short time - depends how much time you get for your competition; it ranges from a weekend to a month, but I think most are closer to a weekend/week than longer.)

I'm not the best source for whether you can ask to start later - if it's a formal SA program where there are a number of people all starting at once, I'm not sure I'd ask to change, but if it's just you, it seems less of a big deal. But people more familiar with 1L SAs will have to weigh in here.

I'm the only 1L but I'll be with the formal program which is 11 or 12 2Ls so I dont want to mess up their programming if they have events planned, etc. I might ask him if I could come the first few days (assuming there will be orientation of some sort) and maybe just take 2 days at the end of the week to work on it but if anyone else can speak to whether this is "okay" to ask, I'd appreciate it.

We have 2 weeks for the writing comp so I'll have 2 weekends but I think my brain will be fried after my 4 hour civpro exam friday so I was hoping to take at least Saturday totally off which really only gives me one full weekend but I guess I'll just have to work on it for a couple hours every day after work. Oh well! It's a good problem to have.
