District Attorneys' Offices 2014

Post by Anonymous User » Wed Aug 07, 2013 3:38 pm

Haven't seen a thread, and thought I'd start one for interviews, offers, and general information.

Applied to Manhattan this Monday (application opened on the 1st), and will be sending paper apps to a variety of other offices.

Also: anyone have any clue what Miami-Dade wants with their non-OCI form? When they are asking for "externship" experience under FL Rule 11, do they mean any summer employment whatsoever? Or only summer employment where you appeared on the record in court?

Rule 11 provides for working as a Certified Legal Intern pre-bar. You must have taken a clinic or externship for credit, so summer employment won't count. Also you have to have been representing a client or the state (not necessarily appearing in court though).

Besides NY and FL are any other offices accepting application for 2014 yet?

OP, here. I can edit the OP to add these.

I think Suffolk County, NY and Suffolk County, MA, both hire.

Good luck to those aiming for Suffolk County, NY. I just did spent my 1L summer there, and the people are really, by and large, terrific colleagues. If I wanted to be a prosecutor, I'd definitely want to start my career there.

Whatever you do, don't get your hopes up for Philly DA. Apply, of course, but don't get your hopes up.

See, e.g., http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 3&t=167259

I don't know anyone, on the internet or in person, who got into Philly DA. Myself included. It was a terrible process. They kept telling me, "Oh we'll get back to you in 2 weeks....another 2 weeks...maybe next January....ummm, we'll get back to you soon, promise." I didn't even get a rejection letter in the end. I threw my hands up and just assumed they were blowing smoke up my ass.

Does anyone know if any of these offices offer travel stipends in the event that you are given an interview?

It's the government so I'd safely assume no. It won't hurt to ask though. I think most first round interviews are done via skype if you are really far away, but anything after that you have to come in on your own dime. I read the website for one of the NY offices and that is what it said basically.

DANY doesn't seem to. I doubt others will. Could mean a hefty amount of $$$ spent on traveling. I think that most offices will schedule interviews with you if you're in a particular area.

I cant tell if Kings County hires pre bar or not

Each year over 2,500 graduates from law schools representing all regions across the nation apply for a limited number of positions. At this time, we only hire graduates after they have passed the New York State Bar Examination. New classes of Assistant District Attorneys begin in January.

They do. If you are the Class of 2014, you apply starting Sept. 1, 2013. As I understand it, you start Jan. 2015. That's a six-month post-bar time-frame because apparently NY bar results for the August test come back in Jan.

So:

1. Apply Sept 2013.
2. Interview etc. through end of 2013.
3. Take August 2014 bar.
4. Pass? Get results in Jan 2015.
5. Begin at KCDA Jan. 2015.

I think, THINK, that's how it works. I talked to an alumna from my law school who was in Step Three of this process, and she will start Jan 2014.

Has anyone actually heard anything from any of the DA's offices. I sent out most of my applications in the last week or so and haven't heard anything.

I have an initial interview scheduled with Manhattan. No word from any other places. Philly's website says it schedules initial interviews for mid-September, so I'm assuming people would hear about those soon?

For those that mailed their packets to Bronx and Philly

did they email or call you letting you know that they received it?

Is anyone applying to Colorado or is that just the PD that hires recent grads?

Nothing from either...Philly says it starts interviewing mid-Sept through Dec. I imagine the first round of interviews must have already been notified by now? :?

I know a few people who got hired into full-time jobs with various Colorado DAs' offices after getting bar results back. However, they all interned there during law school (and at least one worked for the DA for free between taking the bar and getting results back). Also, keep in mind there isn't a central DA the way there's a centralized PD, so you'd have to go through each county's DA office.

Does anyone have information on post-bar clerkship positions and how to find them?

Should I just start emailing/calling all the offices I'm interested in?
