Why in the world would they raise salaries when they have more of an upper hand now than they ever had before. In any other world, they would drop salaries back down, if it wasn't for the fact that none of the top students would apply there unless every other firm followed. So they have zero incentive to raise, and every incentive to keep it where it is now.

If there is Simpson to $190k, and the market matches, there will be many more layoffs this year to compensate. And when you're working harder because your cases/deals are then more leanly staffed, you'll look like a dick because you're making $190k (not that we don't already look like dicks when we complain about our work and we make $160k...).
Also, bonuses will be smaller.
