SA orientation at a resort
The firm I'm at this summer is bringing together all the summer associates to have a four day orientation at a resort.
Can anybody comment on what these events are like? Is it basically a drinkfest in disguise or do they actually teach you stuff?
Who else attends? Partners? Associates?
Should I keep it business casual or is packing jeans/shorts ok? Swimming trunks? (location is on west coast)

You should probably ask your recruiting coordinator these questions. You could also ask you mentor if you've been assigned one. On another note, a resort orientation sounds pretty awesome.

Re: SA orientation at a resort
treat it as a 4 day interview... don't do anything totally stupid, and don't be a complete bore either...
everything else, as the coordinator for specifics, or someone from your school

I've know people at both Latham and Baker Botts who did these and they were basically drink fests. Just don't vomit on a partner or anything.
Edit: I'm pretty sure they were resorts anyway. They were definitely drink fests.

Is this the Latham summer academy? That shit is awesome. Partners, associates, and summer associates all end up in the pool during one of the parties. Lots of drinking. Just be a median drinker and you're good. It's a really fun bonding experience for your office SA's.

could be perkins coie; i've heard they do this as well?
anyway, i would just relax, have fun, but definitely be mindful to 1) not drink too much; 2) not say anything controversial or in poor taste; 3) be friendly but not too friendly; these people will be your superiors/peers and you can't let your guard down (especially before an offer)

OP here. Haven't started at the firm yet, so I don't have people I can ask just yet. Just wanted to check in with TLS to see if there were any general advice/anecdotes.
Sound like it'll be fun! My only concern is that I get really red after a drink, even when I'm not remotely drunk- I'll have to figure something out or stay in dark corners.

Try taking Pepcid prior to drinking to deal with the Asian glow.Anonymous User wrote:OP here. Haven't started at the firm yet, so I don't have people I can ask just yet. Just wanted to check in with TLS to see if there were any general advice/anecdotes.

It doesn't work with everyone but it's def worth a shot if you're worried about it.Bronck wrote:Tried this myself and have never had any luck with it unfortunately.

Paranoid 1L talk, but: do partners/associates even care if you get the Asian glow? Or will people just think NBD as long as you're holding your own?bk187 wrote:It doesn't work with everyone but it's def worth a shot if you're worried about it.Bronck wrote:Tried this myself and have never had any luck with it unfortunately.

Re: SA orientation at a resort
Makes sense. I start to get the glow even after 1 drink (obviously not remotely drunk at that point)
