Possible to work at law firm while studying for bar?
My friend at S&C said his firm provides him with 6 weeks of work time (paid at the pro-rated rate of an associate) during the summer while he studies for the bar as a recent graduate. Can anyone confirm this program?
Does this program exist for any other firm in the V10? I'll be working at another, and I never heard of such a thing.

It's very rare, but does happen sometimes. If S&C does it I've never heard of it before.

He'll be clerking -- so that may be the reason why.

Isn't that just a generous bar stipend?

Sounds like it. 6 weeks = ~$18,000, which is right around what many firms in NYC give as a bar stipendUncle.Joe wrote:Isn't that just a generous bar stipend?

NY firms don't give a bar stipend, just an advance (including S&C).Sup Kid wrote:Sounds like it. 6 weeks = ~$18,000, which is right around what many firms in NYC give as a bar stipendUncle.Joe wrote:Isn't that just a generous bar stipend?
If he's clerking, he may be working for S&C as a pre-clerkship SA while studying for the bar, which happens. Otherwise, sounds like a misinterpretation of the bar advance or a lie.

As an absolute rule, this is incorrect; I work at a V30 firm that gave us a $17,000 bar stipend (not an advance - we didn't have to pay it back). I will note that while it was better than the more typical advance, we had to pay for our own bar prep courses and bar exam fees.Anonymous User wrote:NY firms don't give a bar stipend...Sup Kid wrote:Sounds like it. 6 weeks = ~$18,000, which is right around what many firms in NYC give as a bar stipendUncle.Joe wrote:Isn't that just a generous bar stipend?
