Big4, Tax Advisory Attorney, What are the hours like?
Entry level in NYC/Chicago/SF. Getting paid 100K+, but < biglaw. I am hoping that the work load is less than 3/4 of biglaw.

I met a tax advisory attorney from E&Y's NY office on a train once. She mentioned they also have a similar system to the billable hours but it is something like 1400. When it is busy time (such as April), she works until 7-8 and also weekends sometime. But most of the time it is 8-9 hours day for her.

Op here. That sounds too good to be true. I mean, I hope it's true.Anonymous User wrote:I met a tax advisory attorney from E&Y's NY office on a train once. That's funny. The people I know who have risen far in big4 (e.g. director) all put in considerably more hours than that. Maybe she was just a life-long staffer?

OP, 100K seems a bit much for entry. Do you have an LLM? Are they bringing you in as an entry-level associate or a senior associate? Also, which group were you hired into?

No LLM/MBA/Accounting degree, just top grades (A's and A+) in tax-related courses at a T14. Entry-level associate (1st year). Don't want to say group, but it's in the general advisory/consulting division (by that, I mean not audit/tax/compliance).Anonymous User wrote:OP, 100K seems a bit much for entry. Do you have an LLM? Is it wealth management / estate planning type work?Anonymous User wrote:No LLM/MBA/Accounting degree, just top grades (A's and A+) in tax-related courses at a T14. Entry-level associate (1st year). Anyone knows about the work load? There has to be someone on TLS who knows this line of work.

it's also a lot easier to inflate hours in audit vs tax or advisory (e.g., one week at a client is 40 billable hours, regardless of how much you do).Anonymous User wrote:as audit my hours are around 2200 billable 2500 total. no way 1400 is accurate

Re: Big4, Tax Advisory Attorney, What are the hours like?
Why don't you ask the firm/company how many hours are expected ? And whether or not they have high & low seasons. Ask about the type of assignments you'll be getting & what is expected of you. Use some common-sense: If the starting pay is in six figures for a young or newly minted attorney, what do you think that they expect to get for their money ? Questions like this are firm/company specific.
Also OP, you seem to be demanding specific answers based on the sharing of only scant, generalized information. Garbage in/garbage out.

I am going to ask the firm, but I need a second opinion. What they tell me may or may not be the real thing.CanadianWolf wrote:Why don't you ask the firm/company how many hours are expected ? My expectation is very realistic: is the work load around 3/4 of the Biglaw load in NYC/Chi/SF?
What more do you need? I will be a tax advisory attorney in the advisory/consulting arm of a Big4. Each Big4 only has one advisory/consulting arm, and the tax attorneys there will do more or less the same thing (as I was told by the firm).

Have one-on-one lunches with a few of your soon-to-be-coworkers. You should get your answers there.
