Do you mean the summer after your 1L year? If so, it's not that uncommon.

Do it! I did it and I loved it & had absolutely no problems getting a big law summer associate position for 2L summer. However, my job abroad did tie into my general area of interest. I.e., I'm interested in doing Latin America corporate work and my summer job was in Argentina, although I was doing more public interest/policy stuff there. I found my job through my school's public interest database & spoke with students who had previously worked there or in the region as well as career counselors. If you want specific information about what I did, my job, etc., PM me. :)
