I'm a 2L with below-median grades at UIUC. Not surprisingly, I completely struck out at OCI. However, I have a lot of other things going for me - student org involvement, moot court editor, outside activities that are directly related to my goals, etc. I've also been very, very actively networking - going to events, contacting people, and so on. Most recently, I did a shadow/mentor day with the CEO and in-house counsel of a company in the burbs. If you have the chance to do something like this, DO IT. My mentor was extremely helpful and gave me some names to contact, which ultimately resulted in an interview at a Vault 100 with the contact and the head of the practice area I'm interested in.
Moral of the story: network and do stuff outside of just the normal school things, especially if your grades are not stellar.

Just interview for now, but in their office, and with the Executive Partner.
But the point is - with my grades, I should not even have received an interview, especially considering that I didn't even apply.
