Everything was always verbal for me until I did background check paperwork.

Keep in mind that this is at-will employment, so there really isn't any reason to worry about having it in writing.

That is to say, yeah, there is always a possibility that you suddenly won't have a job anymore, but that's not because you haven't signed anything.

I have no contract to sign with a V-25 firm, which surprised me. There was no discussion of salary either, since I thought there would be a contract with that information. No, you aren't alone.

A non-equity partner at a V50 was bragging once how informal the employment agreements are. He told us about a case where a client wanted proof that he had authority to sign a document in the firm's name and how it took him awhile to find someone to verify it for the client, because he had no employment agreement or contract or appointment letter.

My firm also has nothing to sign or information in re salaries, benefits, etc.

The only confirmation we have had is a letter from the hiring partner that says, "Dear XXX, We are happy to confirm that you have accepted your offer! etc., etc.," So at least it is nice to know I have not been forgotten.

Well this thread makes me feel better as I also have nothing but a letter confirming the offer.

I don't even have a letter. It's all oral.

Maybe ask for a letter for your records?

Edit: nvm, this sounds stupid.

True, but there's nothing OP or anyone else ITT can do to stop that. Having signed papers won't prevent that possibility.

I confirmed via phone and then the recruiting coordinator asked that I respond in email that I would accept offer. I then sent her a follow up asking if I needed to sign anything else, and she informed me that the email was sufficient and that I will receive a confirmation letter in the mail in a few weeks.

Regardless of the confirmation letter, I just wanted to have an email saying that they acknowledged that I responded to the offer. Not sure if I was being overcautious, but I did not feel like it could hurt. In my head, worse case scenario would be that someone forgot or did not record my acceptance or claim that I did not accept the offer on time.

V20 firm stated no paperwork to sign until after the new year. Doesn't sound uncommon at all.

You don't sign anything because you are an at will employee. I don't think I ever signed anything and I'm a second year attorney with my firm. All I got was a letter confirming my offer, salary, benefits, etc. (Hmm, maybe I did sign the bottom of the letter and return it? Who knows). Now you'll sign crap once you go through orientation or whatever, administrative stuff to get your pay, benefits, or whatever, but you won't be signing an employment contract - they can cut you lose whenever they want (and you can ditch them at whim as well).

I never signed anything for the summer nor for my full-time offer. Hell, my firm didn't even do a background check.
