This. I've found that giving a person more than what they want just annoys them. If they're interested, they'll ask for more info or an interview.

Minor good news: A prof I like has a fair amount of contacts for me to talk to.

I've always thought cover letters do me a disservice since my resume is pretty strong, but I suck at writing about myself; I've never been able to do it. Decent mid-size firm, looking for entry level in my market, would be pumped as shit to land an interview. They don't specify any particular items to include in the application. Are cover letters really necessary? Are they actually read? I can't imagine actually reading them with a straight face.
If they don't ask for one but don't specifically say, "send a resume," I'd probably write an abbreviated cover letter as the text of the email to which I attached a resume.

I hate writing them too (who doesn't??). But once I finally sucked it up and got it down before OCI, all I've had do since were minor modifications.

Mods should out this fool. Oh well.

Regarding my hypothetical CALI, let me elaborate.

The title of the course in the catalog is "Seminar: Evidence and Trial Practice"

I figure most people looking at a CALI for a seminar won't give a shit (prob won't give a shit anyhow), but I feel like if I put "CALI Award - Evidence and Trial Practice" someone might think I'm lying about having CALIs in those two courses. Guess it probably doesn't matter.

Yeah I'd never send more than is requested. Nor would I ever send less than requested. The particular posting in question doesn't specify any materials. My original post was unclear about that.

Yeah I see what you're worried about. I think just putting the full title is best. I doubt there are a significant number of people who would be impressed with a CALI in a bar course but not impressed with a CALI in a seminar. It's out of your hands either way. I do think it'd be a bit silly to just omit it though.

FWIW, from my recent experiences it seems that real estate work has really picked up in the last 6 months. And no, I'm not just talking about pure closing work either.

I've networked a ton through an experienced (30 years+) residential real estate broker, who my friend works for, and as the broker sits in on a ton of boards and has been around the block a few times, has been able to personally introduce me to 4 or 5 firms. Have had 2 solid sit down interviews, and while both of them more or less have been "talk to me after taking the Bar," neither of the firms are looking to advertise for these projected positions. Additionally, my 2L summer firm, which is all RE (~50 attorneys) appears to be ready to pull the trigger on FINALLY hiring from last year's SA class; I have an honest-to-God interview (as in "we have a position we're looking to fill") next week.

For any of you who don't have a connection like that, work the church angle or family friends or what not, to try and sit down for informational interviews and get the wheels turning. That's how my meeting with the real estate broker almost 2 years ago got all these wheels in motion (including my 2L summer job!). And I'm top third at a school that is clinging to the T100

T14 here, from a DNCG school, still looking, haven't gotten an interview in ages, tons of networking over the past two years hasn't really panned out, and symplicity is a bust. You have any contingency plan lined up, other T14 person?

T14 CCN here. I suck at networking but had a few interviews last fall from mass mails. Contingency plan is moving back to state where I'm taking the bar and applying to more jobs over the summer. Womp womp.

I went to a T14 in NE and graduated with top 20% grades; made law review. But no interviews. My school has huge class sizes and also known for graduates who went unemployed. Struggling with depression now.

Trying to get something with family connections and find work in Asia.

Career services is so fucking worthless. I kept refusing their help because they suck, but finally I got desperate enough to give in and I answered one of their emails and let them know that, yes, I was still looking for a job. Now they email me about jobs they post on symplicity a couple hours after they're posted (and after I have of course already applied to them). Thanks assholes.

I don't think mine ever got me an interview, but it was nice to be able to vent to her.

I'll always appreciate that.
