If job security and stability is important to you (as it should be to anyone ITE), Jones Day has really been exemplary. One of the few firms who didn't have to defer summer associates, who didn't have rounds of layoffs, etc. having been there for a summer, I can see how stable the environment is. They certainly aren't as extravagant as some other firms, but the flip side is the job security.

FWIW BH offered only 2 of 5 SAs in Orlando this summer. That's kind of scary even if you are going for CLE or w/e.

Keep in mind that, at jones day, your entire first associate year is "undeclared" with regard to practice group. So you will have many months to try everything out and come to the right choice. And many people are cross-disciplinary when it comes to their groups. I see many attorney profiles with multiple groups listed.pjo wrote:I was already thinking JD was the most stable, having already heard about their policy of not laying ppl off during the recession. Two things concern me with them though 1. I think the expectation with JD is that even associates are expected to travel fairly often, which to me would be a downside 2. At JD I would have to pick a specialized group like only M&A, private equity, or cap markets, whereas at the other two firms transactional attorneys do all of that, not just one.

I know several SA's and first year associates at Jones Day (Cleveland) and their experience has been incredible. Another thing to keep in mind is that JD's Cleveland office is its original office, and is its biggest office outside NYC and DC.
Also, I'm biased because I'm from NE Ohio, but Cleveland is a great place to live for the price. Making $130k in Cleveland is extremely good.

If it's JD Cleveland, that's like a no-brainer. They're the alpha-dogs in Ohio.

Agreed, and I'm pretty sure they're at 145,000 according to their website.

Jones Day Pittsburgh also pays $145k, which is amazingly well for SW PA. I really envy your position.

Contrarian: From listening to people describe both environments, Baker sounds like a better place to work. Pays less, though, and JD does have dat stability.

Do you have a JD offer from Cleve or Pitt? Do you prefer to be in either city?

Cleveland. I like both cities equally yet differently (I think Pittsburgh has the nicer metro area, but Cleveland has the nicer suburbs/city outskirts like Shaker Heights).Anonymous User wrote:Do you have a JD offer from Cleve or Pitt? Do you prefer to be in either city?

True. But one of these cities is trending in quite a different direction from the other.pjo wrote:Cleveland.
