I've heard universal terrible things about working here. I hear there are a healthy number of screamers and that the culture is pretty bleak. Just giving you a heads up.

I interviewed with one of their non-NYC offices, and every single person that interviewed me started the interview by saying "it's not as bad as the blogs say. The NYC office is crazy and associates work crazy hours for demanding partners. It's way better here."

It was comical to me that every interview started that way. As if that was their big pitch.

At callbacks, when people ask where else I"m looking, a good chunk of the time, they mention firms that I should avoid and Cadwalader is typically on the list.

Also, spoke with one associate that lateraled from Cadwalader and siad that people are BEGGING to get out. She called it the worst 2 years of her life.

Ditto to all the people who say it's a horrible place to work. Think it speaks volumes that the only person I know who wanted to summer there (and did, and received an offer) is probably the most reviled guy in my law school class.

Cadwalader has reputational issues. Is a run of the mill "did anyone here back from them" thread during OCI the appropriate place for it?

The official word from Cadwalader is that they're trying to make it a better place to work. At least thats what it says on Chambers and other similar sources. Is there any truth to this or is it perhaps just the firm trying desperately to improve its reputation without actually making substantive changes

We're talking about reputational issues because it's kinda like a cooley law school applicant asking about decisions, and wanting to make sure they understand what they're getting into. Just looking out for ya.

Cadwalader pays its associates $160,000 per year in New York.

They could literally make you scrub toilets for 10 hours per day while blasting Mein Kampf and it would still be a job that pays six fucking figures.

A lot of people go through the 2L job hunt and wind up with one, or just a few offers. Far more don't get one at market rate, and far more still don't get anything at all.

Shitting on Cadwalader is totally unacceptable unless somebody has multiple offers and wants to choose between them. Until that point, a job with Cadwalader represents a bright future and a ridiculous sign of opulent American culture that dozens of thousands of law grads per year would kill to have a shot at.

I interviewed there last year and I asked the interviewer what the best thing is about working for Cadwalader. His answer was the resume line you get when you leave to look for new opportunities afterward, as if a quick departure was an inevitability for those coming to the firm.

Cadwalader summer here. I think things HAVE improved, but it's definitely to gauge how much based only on 11 weeks. The most notorious "screamer" rainmaker partner Dennis Block has been gone for a few years. Stories of his antics were legion at the firm. The morale of the litigation department seemed especially good to me.

This isn't to say it's a better place to work at than other biglaw firms; I can't speak to that. But it doesn't seem as bad as it was a few years ago.

Probably. Big firm lawyers are actually a pretty hot commodity no matter what the firm. The better your firm (and more realistically, the better the practice area you're in) the better your exit options will be, but there are a ton of variables at play beyond just what Vault says.
