is this ever permitted? i will be starting at a biglaw firm next fall. my firm's start date is very late, and i have an offer to do some legal research for a solo practitioner in my home city - is this generally permitted?

no idea - but i read somewhere that be careful not to get yourself into a conflict of interest somehow.

Op here: Not really worried about conflict because it would be V10 and solo DUI/PI shop haha.
