Hi and TYIA!
I'm considering using my appellate brief for my 1l legal research class as my OCI writing sample, and I figured some others on this board might be doing the same. I was just curious if anyone had any thoughts of, aside from particular sub issues, what sections of an appellate brief are especially amenable to being omitted (e.g. conclusion, issues presented, summary of argument, etc.)? Also, the cover page/table of contents can be safely omitted right?

Re: writing sample question
im using mine but wasn't planning on omitting anything. Now that you mention it, though, that's probably a good idea. Anyone else omit those formal parts?

Re: writing sample question
FWIW, when I used mine for 1L summer jobs, I omitted the boilerplate sections but included all of the legal analysis. Also, if there was a small or non-complex point, I'd try to leave that out too. I'd also leave the facts unless you're planning on including an explanation with the brief. I reduced mine from 16+ pages down to 10, and am planning on using it again for OCI.

Thanks, that is helpful. You didn't include cover/table of contents, right?

Re: writing sample question
No, but I did leave section headings, and I put "omitted" underneath them for sections I was leaving out like this:
I. Standard
[Omitted]
I. Standard
[Omitted]
