1L grades or summer associate/internship more important? Forum

Which would you say is more important for 2L summer employment success? Does anyone have charts showing one or the other is more important?

Is your 1L SA something you can continue working on during the school year? If so, you've got a great excuse for why your grades aren't as high as they would be.

If 1L SA leads to 2L SA (irrespective of grades - most firms will care about grades at lease somewhat); then the 1L SA means less than grades, assuming you are hired full time after your 2L SA. That said, if you ever have to leave that job, your grades are going to count. That said, the above is probably the ONLY situation in which your 1L SA is "more important" than your 1L grades. As someone that did receive an invite back for my 2L SA from my 1L SA firm and ultimately did work for my 1L SA firm post law school, I can say that the grades are probably still more important.

even if 1L job leads to 2L and full-time offer, 1L grades are still far more important - because great grades give you options.
