If getting an offer from a small firm, and you went into the interview, etc. having been told salary is negotiable - how does this work? Do you just respond with a higher number? Or should you really not, because you should feel grateful just to have a job in this economy. Or - do you look weak if you don't negotiate when they've said salary is negotiable?
If negotiate - how much? $5000? More, less?
Any help is appreciated!

Re: Negotiating small law salary?
It really depends - on your market, on the profitability of the firm you're joining, on your practice area, on the amount you're starting the negotiations with ($5,000 might be a lot if you're starting at $50K, but not as much if you're talking $100K), on your pedigree (what school/rank/law review/moot court), etc. If salary is negotiable, you absolutely should negotiate - the question is how much is appropriate. But look at it this way: they've already decided to hire you, so the worst they can do is say "sorry but this is our final offer," in which case you take it. And congrats on getting a job ITE!
