Big 2L Grade Drop: How to Handle?

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Jul 02, 2012 1:59 pm

I don't know if my summer employer is going to be in a position to give me an offer at the end of the summer. My work is great and I've got great references from here if I need them, but I'm worried about getting no-offered for financial reasons.

I've got problems if I have to look for a job next year, though. By the time this year was wrapped up, my class standing fell from top 25% to just below median. Long story short, I had a some family crises this year that were a serious distraction (immediate family member died during fall finals, then I essentially became the guardian [but not legally] of another family member as a result of this).

Other than grades, my resume's not terrible. On the board of my law review, pre-law WE, etc. If I have to start sending stuff out and do 3L OCI, I imagine most employers are going to look at my grades and pitch my materials. Should I try to address the grade drop in my cover letter? Is it going to matter to anyone?

Sounds like you have a very good reason for your grade drop. However, in my opinion it is probably best to not address it at all. It is personal and it is negative that your grades have dropped. Just focus on the positives - you are on law review, did great 1L year, got a job with a firm this summer where you do good work and have good references. If someone asks you directly about the grade drop then you explain why it happened. Good luck.
