I can't pretend my opinion is worth much, but I'd wager that he'll be Justice Watford in ten years or less.

I'm always happy to talk about the legal employment opportunities for federal judges.

Eh... He's smart and well-liked. The problem is that conservatives seem to really like him, this might make him a risky choice for a democratic president. Especially if a democrat is replacing Ginsburg or Breyer, they can't take the risk of putting a quasi-conservative on the bench (call it a reverse-Souter). Likewise, he was put on the bench by Obama, which would probably make him off limits for a Republican President in our current political climate. I think better bets would be if a second term Obama could get Halligan or Nourse onto the bench (likewise, in the East, Judge Diaz could be a good pick for a democrat - a well respected, hispanic, Marine).chrisihat wrote:So, I am sure many saw that Judge Watford recently got confirmed to the Ninth Circuit.
What does everyone think the odds are that he eventually gets nominated to SCOTUS?
Would that factor into your decision of whether or not to try and clerk for him?
Looking forward to hearing people's thoughts.

Next SCOTUS opening will be his as long as Obama gets reelected. Obama has done a magnificent job in terms of diversity in the federal courts. I believe he has put more black judges in the CoA than anyone ever, or very close to the most ever. He's waiting for either Ginsburg or Breyer to retire for put the 3rd black justice ever.
