I don't have specific firms offhand b/c it's different year to year based on need. However, in regard to the no SA experience, I think it'll be held against you if you've never had at least a firm experience. From what I've seen kids who did a bunch of PI work for example, had absolutely no shot at a firm b/c they were basically typecast as that type of person.

There are firms that generally try to poach from other firms, these include off the top of my head Cravath, STB, Latham, Cleary, Paul Weiss.vegeta wrote:Nope.timbs4339 wrote:Did you have a SA position?
Firms I know have called back people without SAs are Willkie, MoFo, Dechert, Cahill.
Any firm that is non-V10 and that does not regularly show up at 3L OCI is a good bet. Some firms show up each year and never hire anyone.

I know I heard that about PI, so I landed a finance gig at a hedge fund for half the summer (no fucking clue how), will this play well with firms?

I'm assuming working for a federal agency is slightly better than PI-type things, but worse than SA, true?
What if the federal agency operates in the same arena as you are interested in (like EPA wanting to do enviro law at a firm)?

I can second Cahill hiring 3L without summering at a firm.

Unless we're talking about big law, I don't necessary agree with the PI spin. I worked at my local PD office both summers and was able to spin the litigation experience I got into interviews with some mid-size firms (150+ attorneys). FWIW, though I have no LR, I have pretty good grades and I'm URM, so that might've helped.

I'm at a CCN and V50 now, had drastic grade improvement my second year, and interviewing with STB and Paul Weiss. I worked at a small boutique firm founded by an associate from a V5 my 1L summer. What are my chances?
