Not seeing the incentive there. Would you stick your head in a toilet all day so I could pay a fraction of a penny less toward your welfare?AZN MegaPoaster wrote:Minimize the burden he will be on society and those who actually do workdixiecupdrinking wrote:Probably not even worth it for someone with substantial student loan debt to spend their time making $7/hour. IBR means if you earn below a certain amount you get to keep it.dixiecupdrinking wrote:Probably not even worth it for someone with substantial student loan debt to spend their time making $7/hour. Therefore, you'd still be making $7 per hour.
I'd rather work than sit on my ass all day complaining that I don't have any money to do anything.
I wonder what on earth people like you would have done in an era before social security and government welfare (e.g. the depression). Would you all have starved to death?

Probably many of us would have, as a statistical matter.dingbat wrote:IBR means if you earn below a certain amount you get to keep it.dixiecupdrinking wrote:Probably not even worth it for someone with substantial student loan debt to spend their time making $7/hour. Yeah, the problem is that the social safety net prevents an adequate amount of starvation from taking place.AZN MegaPoaster wrote:And therein lies the problem with modern Americadixiecupdrinking wrote:Probably many of us would have, as a statistical matter.dingbat wrote: I'd rather work than sit on my ass all day complaining that I don't have any money to do anything.

I love having a safety net, but I think it should be just that - a safety net.dixiecupdrinking wrote:Yeah, the problem is that the social safety net prevents an adequate amount of starvation from taking place.AZN MegaPoaster wrote:And therein lies the problem with modern Americadixiecupdrinking wrote:Probably many of us would have, as a statistical matter.dingbat wrote: I'd rather work than sit on my ass all day complaining that I don't have any money to do anything.

Preventing people from starving is great. Having people refuse work because it's "not even worth it" is a different matter.
Its why food stamps are better than welfare checks (even if those do get abused)

I look forward to the days when the pending student loan crisis finally hits and IBR is replaced by the Hunger Games. I've been brushing up on my bow and arrow skills.

Anyway, if I'm being a little petulant here it's because few things push my buttons like a bunch of future BigLawyers ragging on someone for not wanting to wash toilets. It's some serious let them eat cake shit up in here.

I did clean toilets for a living at one point.dixiecupdrinking wrote:Kevin James would never be so mean spirited.Tom Joad wrote:Maybe you just suck.dixiecupdrinking wrote:Yeah, the problem is that the social safety net prevents an adequate amount of starvation from taking place.

I was living hand to mouth for a while and I did have to figure out how to survive on nothing.
Since then, I've never considered a job beneath me.
If I lost my job tomorrow, I'd go back to cleaning toilets if that was the only job I could get.

Re: What to do if I just can't find work
Is anyone noticing an uptick in people going to law school/other programs just to live off of the student loan money? I've had several conversations in the last few months where this seemed to be main motivation for going to law school. This didn't seem to be the case a few years ago when I was an applicant.

Oh my god. What school to you go to? How bad was your GPA?Anonymous User wrote:If I just can't find work, and I need money to (eat, not sleep in gutter, etc) does it make sense to stay in school longer until I line something up?
It would defer student loans and keep finaid coming in to keep the bills paid.
Worth it?

HA! Yes! I am glad I am not the only one who has taken-up the hunger games analogy. That's what I was thinking about when I was watching it..."oh, this is law school..."kalvano wrote:I look forward to the days when the pending student loan crisis finally hits and IBR is replaced by the Hunger Games. Re: What to do if I just can't find work
I've known people who havn't but perhaps it varies by the school. Which did you attend? How much did they approve? I ask since it is the school who decides how much you "need" and many don't think you "need" it if it is only for an online college.spleenworship wrote:Online classes DO pay living costs.
