following up with HR
When is it appropriate to follow up on an application you submitted to a firm? After my initial application submission, they asked for writing sample and references but I haven't heard back from then in about 2 weeks. Is it ok for me to shoot an email asking for a status of my app and what would be the best way to frame it? Or is it better to not bother the HR person and wait it out?

Re: following up with HR
Since you're probably talking about a position for this summer, then it would be appropriate to follow up after 2 weeks of no contact. You can email HR and ask for a status update and offer to provide additional info/answer any questions they may have regarding your candidacy. If they don't get back to your email within a few days (since the summer is looming) then it is safe to call them.
