Unemployment for my 2L summer looking more and more likely.

Post by Gamecubesupreme » Fri Mar 09, 2012 10:05 pm

Already applied to almost 30 jobs at this point.

They range to mid-size firms to boutique ones.

No luck with any of them. CSO fixed my cover letter and resume countless number of times to no avail.

I am gonna make one last push in March. But I don't think there is much hope for me.

So if I do end up unemployed for this summer, what should I do?

I honestly don't know if I will end up with a job after I graduate next year, so now I am trying to plan for that as well.

I'll move this to the employment forum if you want. Also, do you mean 30 jobs recently? Because unless you're in a tiny market I'm of the opinion that 30 applications is nothing. I think that you may be able to do a research assistant position with the law school as a fall back for 2L summer.

Oh okay, I thought the employment forum was for people who found a job, not for people looking for advice at how to face unemployment. But yeah, you can move it if you want.

My market isn't tiny, but it's not really that big either. I will keep sending out applications, but like I said, I'm just not getting any response.

I guess I will go the RA route if all fails.

Other markets not an option?

I did apply to one other region with no luck.

My career adviser also told me unless the employers believe I have a good reason for working there (like, I will be moving there after I graduate or something), they are unlikely to hire someone from a different state.

Not sure how credible that is though.

Sorry for your troubles, bro, I remember you being a good poaster back during our LSAT.

I agree with DG, you should be dropping a lot more apps than you're dropping. It might be unpalatable, but are you looking beyond firms?

To be honest, I am willing to do anything short of working for free now.

Have you tried calling random government agencies in the federal directory? That's how I got my (nicely) paid 2L summer gig and how the random guy I shared an apartment with 2L summer got his. I know of 2L paid summer gov jobs that went unfilled last year and are having/had trouble finding people this year because they don't recruit on-campus or in Arizona. They expect students to find them and send in resumes cold.

I moved it over; hopefully you should get more responses.

I don't know what your school's reach is and where you can legitimately think of mailing with your ties/creds, but if I were you I would probably be applying to perhaps 10 times as many places. Not even exaggerating. Kalvano put together a guide to finding non-nalp firms a while back, if you can find it perhaps it will be of help.

To be blunt, you applied to less than 30 positions. Assuming you aren't top third at a T14, you should not be surprised at all about being in the position you are in. It's a numbers game and you're far behind.

Does anyone know the link to that guide? Really appreciated- thanks!

Brother,

How convinced are you that you want to be an attorney? I would start looking for alternative career paths, as even if you get a government sort of 2L gig- they rarely turn into offers down the line. The vast majority of the time they just consume gas money and a worthless resume spot.
