Market paying jobs that DON'T require copious reading

Post by law777 » Wed Feb 08, 2012 2:11 am

I'm a 1L and did well first semester, but I am sick of reading.

Are there any jobs that a JD has a good chance at obtaining that pay market or better that do not involve an overwhelming amount of reading? I know it's a broad question but any brainstorming (especially from real world experience) is appreciated.

95% of being a lawyer is reading and writing. In some cases, 100%.

You have chosen careers poorly, it would seem.

You guys do know that there is more to law than litigation right? I don't know if you can refer to the legal due diligence involved in M&A and capital market transactions as "reading."

Could you expound on how much reading is involved in M&A and capital market work?

See if you can get on with the NY DA's office. Jack McCoy never seems to read anything!

A lawyer that doesn't read is like an accountant that doesn't count.

Reading's only important 'til you know your shit. Then, it's the writing you've got to worry about!

What exactly do you envision yourself doing all day if not reading? There aren't a lot of white collar jobs that don't essentially look like that...

I don't know that Ken spends a lot of each day reading. Look to the land, my friend. And then figure out a way to sell it to someone.

Public Defender. I'm pretty sure you just wing it, and let the Innocent Project fix your mistakes in 20 years.

Based on my work with the Innocence Project I'm afraid that this too often does appear to be the case.

Accountants don't count, silly. That's what a calculator or Excel is for.

"Market or better" meaning $160+? I dunno, those are overwhelmingly going to be desk-jockey jobs. I think your best bet actually is something like DA or PD or other client-focused PI organization, where you spend more time in court and in client meetings because you don't have time to sit and do the legal research on their cases that you ideally would.

Too bad we don't have something that will read for us like calculators add for us.

We do. They're called associates. Once you make it rain, you can get a few.

HI GUYS, WHAT CAN I DO WITH MY MD DEGREE THAT DOESN'T INVOLVE BEING AROUND SICK PEOPLE? I HATE SICK PEOPLE.

Sorry, OP. I see a career change in your future.

Pretty sure a lot of MDs don't deal with sick people. If you are going to bash the OP, at least do it well.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
