UT - No Job - No Leads remaining - Too late for more apps?
I'm above median at UT, have run down all my leads to no avail (only interested in a firm job, hate the idea of working for a judge) is it too late to targeted mass-mail more firms?

Are you a 1L or 2L?

Plenty of people above median at HYS can't even get market-paying 1L firm jobs. Probably not going to happen for you. If you just want anything that's not a judicial internship, have you applied for unpaid positions at government agencies? Have you applied to small firms in/near your hometown?

It's not too late because UT has OCI fair, but you cant sit around waiting for that. I have no idea how many they will hire. Getting a firm job 1L year isn't easy. You should look for other things.

You are mind blowingly stupid if you think you can take only a firm job for 1L summer, especially if you're at UT (as opposed to HYS), and especially if you're just above median.Anonymous User wrote:I'm above median at UT, have run down all my leads to no avail (only interested in a firm job, hate the idea of working for a judge) is it too late to targeted mass-mail more firms?
Get *a* job as soon as you can, and focus on getting good grades this semester. You'll need them.

1) While there may be more 1L SA spots in TX than other areas of the country, they are still not a common thing to get.
2) Feeling like you are entitled to a 1L SA is incredibly douchey (and dumb, since you are only above median).

Also, I interned for a judge last summer, and it was awesome. One of the most interesting and informative times I've had since being in law school.
And given the quality of competition for 1L SA positions, median, even at UT, isn't going to cut it.

Median at UT isn't even the greatest place for a 2L SA let alone a 1L SA.kalvano wrote:Also, I interned for a judge last summer, and it was awesome. One of the most interesting and informative times I've had since being in law school.

OP, if you don't want to apply to judges, look at other stuff -- you can go to places like prosecutor's offices, PD offices, state attorney offices, small firms, etc. if you don't want to work for a judge. But you really shouldn't rule out working for a judge because it's really a fun and interesting way to spend 1L summer.

Re: UT - No Job - No Leads remaining - Too late for more apps?
BU, Top 25%, scored a paying SA two days ago at a DC boutique. It's possible. After Christmas, I switched from mass mailing to a targeted strategy. I have coursework in L&E, and a little bit of work experience in that field from college internships and my summer job. I targeted small L&E firms with a more "personal" cover-letter talking about why working the field meant so much to me.
If you have experience or real interest in a field: real estate, bankruptcy, criminal, IP, L&E, subrogation, etc., try to find smaller firms that specialize in that area and mail them. Many of them aren't "looking" for SA's, but may be inclined to create a position for the right person. I'm going to be making $900/wk working at a dream job.
EDIT: I'm a 2L, screw you picky 1L.

I disagree with the other posters OP. You clearly are a cut above your classmates and the other 1Ls without SAs. I mean, come on! You're above median! And you really want a firm job, unlike everyone else who just applies to the firms when they strike out with judges. You deserve those SAs, man. I wouldn't even apply elsewhere until at least April or May. A

OP Anon here - Sorry if the post came off as douchey, I have opportunities in other non-law industries that I will pursue for this summer if this strikes out. Just wanted to know if there was any point in more mailing at this point...

not doing law as a 1L may hurt you at OCI.Anonymous User wrote:OP Anon here - Sorry if the post came off as douchey, I have opportunities in other non-law industries that I will pursue for this summer if this strikes out. Just wanted to know if there was any point in more mailing at this point...

You'd be stupid to do something non-law over the summer, unless it's something awesome like painting Rebecca Romijn blue for the next X-Men movie.Anonymous User wrote:OP Anon here - Sorry if the post came off as douchey, I have opportunities in other non-law industries that I will pursue for this summer if this strikes out. Employers at OCI are going to want to see something legal-related, for a variety of reasons. Not having that will be a red flag.
Just work for a goddamn judge, it's easy to get and fun.

Re: UT - No Job - No Leads remaining - Too late for more apps?
slight derail on the topic. Is it too late to apply to judges? I have top 5-10% grades (UT), but I'm from out of state, so I struck out with 1L SAs. What kind of judges should I be applying to? Do I have a shot at 5th circuit COA? Should I apply to Magistrate judges, or am I pretty likely to get a fed. district court?

it doesn't really matter, but apply everywhere you could stay for the summer (and somewhere that would qualify for fin aid)Anonymous User wrote:slight derail on the topic.
