They can subject you to one. But you have to disclose any drug use regardless of whether or not they test you.
And I really wouldn't advise lying about it.

None of the three prosecutor offices I've worked for subjected me to a drug test (though they asked plenty of questions about it on their background check forms) but these were all internships. The office I'm working for after graduation has not said anything about it and I've signed all the forms already so I don't think one is required. But it might depend on the office?

DA's offices near me tend to follow the practice of just asking you to disclose all the drugs you've (1.) tried and (2.) done in the past 2-3 years. Generally speaking, if you don't have any arrests or there's no firm evidence tying you to prior drug use, you're probably OK lying about it, with the caveat that getting caught lying is a lot worse than admitting out the gates you've dabbled in drugs. This is especially true with marijuana use in your distant past: For the most part, nobody cares about pot as long as you're not still smoking, so it makes no sense to lie. I even had someone from the AG's office tell me that they look harder at the people who say they've never once tried pot, because they suspect those people are lying.
