1L Summer offers w/ req'd 2L Summer Commitments Attached
T14 school
Assuming:
1. Have the grades/connections etc. to get a V50 1L summer offer, but the V50 firm also requires a minimum of a 4 week commitment during 2L summer.
2. Maintain grades through 2nd semester of 1L, have the grades/connections to get multiple V10 interviews via aforementioned connections.
3. 14 week long summer
4. 1L summer opportunity and 2L summer opportunity are in different markets in different regions and different states.
---
Now, I know some of the V10 firms have minimum 2L summer week commitments and don't want you to summer with another firm in the same region/city, this leads to a few questions on the topic:
1. Do any V10 and/or V50 firms have policies not allowing split summers during 2L?
2. Would it be necessary to disclose the pre-existing 2L summer commitment to the V10 potential 2L firms and if so, harmful effects on interview/chances? (Connections are good enough to get to the interview stage but probably not guarantee a job)
3. Do people ever renege on the 2L summer commitment after the 1L summer? I'm assuming this is a big no no and probably ethically dubious at best.

I have a feeling a firm is trying something new this summer and throwing off all the usual rules for its offerees, who are all running here. The language here seems a bit different from the earlier post.BlueDiamond wrote:didnt you already post this?

Was the other post any more logical than this one? Maybe I'll go read it instead.LawIdiot86 wrote:I have a feeling a firm is trying something new this summer and throwing off all the usual rules for its offerees, who are all running here. The only thing odd about the is that the 2L summer is in a different office. Generally, 1L firms invite you back for a few weeks at the end of the 2L summer so that you can "confirm the offer." Other firms know this and generally don't care, even the ones that don't usually allow split summers.

The only thing I could imagine is that the 1L summer is at a branch office of the firm and the 2L short summer is at the head office to make the offer to everyone at once. But it seems like an absurd amount of extra effort for the firm.Anonymous User wrote:The only thing odd about the is that the 2L summer is in a different office. OP here
To clarify, when I said 1L summer and 2L summer opportunities, I meant with different firms so:
1L Summer firm (V50): Wants 1L summer + commitment to do 4 weeks in same office during 2L summer
2L Summer firm (V10): Presumably would want 10 weeks during 2L summer - Also interested in whether any V10 firms have requirements beyond a 10 week minimum and no splitting w/in same city

i think you're putting horse horse before the cart if you are counting on getting a V10 SA position next year. you don't even have second semester grades yet, and you couldn't guarantee it even with amazing grades anyway.

I don't think OP is "putting horse before cart". What I am getting from what OP is saying is he probably has an offer for 2L summer already. And yes, some programs make that possible. If that is the case, I'll suggest that OP just make his decision based on where s/he really wants to stay. I don't think taking a 1L Summer offer with commitments and completely bailing 2L summer is a good look if the other firm does not allow splitting.somewhatwayward wrote:i think you're putting horse horse before the cart if you are counting on getting a V10 SA position next year. you don't even have second semester grades yet, and you couldn't guarantee it even with amazing grades anyway.

This really is nbd. I summered at a firm 1L that had the same deal. None of the firms that gave me an offer as a 2L, including several V10s, had any problem with me doing a return appearance at my 1L firm. This isn't really considered "splitting" in the traditional sense. Firms know that other firms do this with 1L summers and they don't really care.
