Do grades matter for offer?

Post by Anonymous User » Thu Jan 05, 2012 3:05 am

All my 2L fall grades were released today. I didn't do terrible (no C's or anything), but dropped from 1L. How much do grades matter for post-SA offer? Firm is V-50.

A .1 drop ought to ding you at most firms, which sucks bro. At least if you were at GDC your grades would have to go up, which is crazy! Also check your credit score; you could get dinged for bad credit.

Best of luck man.

Confirmed for GDC. Friend of a friend got no-offered because his GPA was 4.0 at the end of 1st year, and thus could not go up.

You guys are mean. Although, I have to admit, it is hard to feel sorry for someone with a V50 offer.

I wish I were in your position.

Below-median in 1L, 4.0 (and a 15-credit load) in 2L today. We probably go to the same school. Lower V100 offer that I don't really like.

It probably depends how much they dropped.

The answer to this question is that no one on TLS has the faintest idea how much grades matter to an offer. However, when you look at the 99% to 100% offer rates at a lot of these firms, it's hard to believe that anything less than a substantial deviation will result in a no offer, assuming no further financial catastrophes.

Are people trolling with that .1 drop thing? I only got 1 grade back so far and it was a below median grade, so I dropped about .1. Once other grades come in it should be a lesser drop, but still a drop nonetheless.

So am I getting no offered?

Well, we know that if our firms didn't ask for 2L grades then they don't care about them.

I dropped about .2 from 1L to 2L, and I still got an offer from GDC. No one at the firm ever mentioned grades in any part of the review process.

It's also incredibly firm specific. Short of anyone here actually creating databases (which won't happen because of fears of being outed), no one can give a universal answer. My general rule of thumb is to stay away from B-s or below. I realize those grades are more difficult to stay away from at certain schools, but a lot of partners don't know or care about that, so just keep plugging away.

Law students can be way too paranoid sometimes. For grades to matter, you'd have to perform extremely poorly in your 2L year such that it would raise serious concerns about your work ethic. No one's going to care if you received some below median grades; every lawyer knows that law school grading can be random at times. If someone says they received a no-offer due to grades, it's probably because either (a) they were a shitty summer associate, or (b) their firm was looking for an excuse to shrink the incoming class because of financial concerns. Firms care too much about getting a near 100% offer rate to no-offer for minor grade drops.

This doesn't get us very far. Even if you were to divulge the firm, it would still provide very little in the way of an answer to the general question "how much do grades matter?"

I got my offer for 2L revoked already. I got an A- in my summer school class. Even though it raised my GPA, they said I should have done better. And they were right. It was an easy A course. FML.

To be fair he sounds like someone out of touch with the job market/career outlook for most Americans, i.e 90 percent of the people on this board ("Law school only makes sense if you go to a 'top 6'." "Most top 14 students are working shitlaw V200 firms." etc").

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
