Not only is it NOT unusual for a lawyer around here never to make six figures, I'd guess that only a fraction of the lawyers in my state consistently make six figures. It's a very poor state and there's not a lot of the kind of commercial activity that generates serious money. The low salaries/billings are offset to some extent by our lower cost of living and by the fact that total tuition at our sole law school is $40,000 for three years. I think you will find that this is the situation in an awful lot of the country away from the Northeast Corridor.

Now, if you total up my salary, employer contribution to retirement, and all of the benefits I get from public sector employment, it probably does exceed $100,000 but I'm talking in terms of W-2 income.
