Big Law

Post by 4gttngBrandonMarshal » Thu Oct 27, 2011 11:51 am

Does the opportunity of getting a big law job exist anymore? I have a little while until I graduate (c/o 2014) but I am still always curious about the legal market.

From anywhere? Sure. Many people in the T14 get them at OCI every year.

mostly top 14, but if you are top 10% at a top 30 or so or a well perceived regional it might happen.

It happens, but we need more information if you are looking for advice (re: specifically, what law school, where do you have ties, and what market are you looking at finding a job in).

From a TTT? Yes, if you're #1 in your class.

OP is at a school below 100. Forget about biglaw, try to get strait A's. One step at a time. The odds are incredibly stacked against OP.

It exists, but you only have a good shot at getting biglaw at a certain schools. I'd say good chance at top 10, decent chance at top 11-14, and possible chance at 15-25. Probably no chance from most other places with a few exceptions.

Wow.

Not quite true, although that's probably how you should treat it when choosing a law school.

This is stupid. There is no cutoff at 25. If anything, there is a drop off after 30. The point is, outside the T14, it's a lot harder and it gets progressively harder as you go down the list.

I'd say about 10% of students outside the Top 30 get biglaw jobs (maybe besides a school like Fordham)

No love for Cornell huh?

T14s that place primarily in NY are probably your best bet for biglaw (barring Stanford of course.)

Lawyer math logic: 10% = no chance.

Flawless victory.

Seriously though, going to a non-T14 with your heart set on biglaw is a poor decision.

TCR. OP, no one gets a job anymore in biglaw. Just the other day I was in Manhattan and I saw Herb Wachtell and Marty Lipton leap to their deaths while a crowd heckled below. Midtown was a hellish scene, as recently laid of junior associates fought like dingos over discarded bagel remnants while security guards handed them their office tchotchkes in boxes bearing Skadden and SullCrom logos. The former office shrews were resorted to pimping their plump, pasty bodies somewhere in the outer boroughs. The lucky senior associates and junior partners could be found enjoying King Cobras and passing out in the gutters. However, I saw the naked body of a young junior associate in an alley, his Jos. A. Bank suit had long since been looted for halal money. A 24 year old ibanker walked by and spat contemptuously. So yes, Biglaw is dead; I recommend killself.
