Medical Leave middle of 2L
Wanted to post annon. Went through OCI, struck out so far (altho waiting on 3 CBs). I now got very sick and may need surgery and probably am going to have to take a medical leave.
I know this is a question for my school. But has anyone had experience with this? Do you take the entire year off? Just the semester? If i took the entire year off can i do OCI again?

Re: Medical Leave middle of 2L
I had some serious family issues come up second semester of 1L and considered taking leave. Ultimately, I just decided to stick it out and stay in school, even though it meant spending every waking hour either studying or being with family in a hospital. It sucked, but not as much as disenrolling, spinning my wheels, falling behind the few people I've gotten to know well in school, and then having to get the motivation back up to re-enroll in school.
I know that this being a personal medical problem can change the analysis a lot. If you simply can't keep going, then that's one thing. But if you do have the option of gutting it out through some huge external time commitments (and I would consider a medical procedure and being prescribed pain medicine to be things that are going to take a lot of time from you), you still might be better off staying in school. You also have to weigh how it will affect your grades. This could be a difficult decision.

Re: Medical Leave middle of 2L
The policies for this depend on your school. Some require a whole year off and others will accept a semester.
It sounds like your results at OCI are having an impact on your decision. That shouldn't be the case. If your health requires it, take the time. But if you're hoping to take time off to have better job prospects or to redo OCI or something, that is probably not a good idea.

That isnt it. My health does require it, as stress is one of the major causes of bringin on my attacks for the condition i was diagnosed with a month ago. It is so hard for me to get any work done, and I am certain my grades are going to suffer.worldtraveler wrote:The policies for this depend on your school. I just feel as if I take a semester off, I will be graduating at a weird time, taking the bar in february, and am pretty much guaranteed to be unemployed for a year b/c no one is hiring in the middle of the semester. Also, I dont know if I'd be losing out on my journal, etc. since I am writing my note now.
Thats why I was asking if we can take the whole year, and start fresh. I am going to talk to my school this week. I was trying to fight it out, but my grades and my health are suffering.

Re: Medical Leave middle of 2L
I took a year off after 1L for medical leave, and everything seems fine. However, I also got relevant part-time work opportunities that will support my resume as soon as I could work, and discussed my options thoroughly with just about every important office at school. I chose not to take just a semester, because as you said, it leaves you somewhat awkwardly placed re: graduating/bar/hiring. As for friends, yes, it's odd to see my class a year ahead, but my good friends have offered wonderful advice and now are my mentors. Overall it wasn't a wash. Your health comes first; I knew that if I didn't leave, my grades would suffer, and that in the end made it worth it.

thank you. were you able to re-do OCI? and were you able to stay on moot court/ journal if you had made one after 1LAnonymous User wrote:I took a year off after 1L for medical leave, and everything seems fine. I went part-time the second semester of 2l, so I will be graduating a semester late. In terms of job prospects, can't give you much hope b/c i struck out again. You will also need to find a way to explain the time off, b/c employers are risk adverse to hiring someone who went off schedule, esp if they find out its medical (this is illegal, but can't really do anything about). I am currently in my 3rd year, so can't give any perspective on what the end result will be.
