Would you take a 1L part time job?
If you (a 1L) got an offer to work part time as a law clerk in biglaw for spring 2012, but they asked you to devote 20 hrs a week to doing so, would you take it?
Pros:
Paid
1L clerking looks good
Cons:
20 hrs less free time per week
Grades sure to suffer

That sounds amazing! Im not a 1L, but Im gonna be working PT during law school anyways... a law clerk job would be perfect!
Those are 20 hours you can cut bullshitting w/ classmates, watching TV, getting drunk etc. WE, money, exposure...all as a 1L. Screw the 20 social hours, keep your grades up

You're joking right?
Stop reading this and go accept the offer. People with good grades from T14's are begging to get screener interviews with biglaw while you are being offered part time work that will undoubtedly lead to full time summers.

I'm suspicious. I'm unaware of any "biglaw" firm as I would define that term that would hire a 1L part time during the year. Or for that matter, that would hire any student during the school year.
So, in order to answer your question, what kind/size/location of firm are we talking about? And, while you're at it, what range of school?

Skeptical. 20 hours a week is an insane requirement that no self-respecting biglaw firm would ask of a 1L.

Still doesn't compute with a "biglaw" firm. Something isn't right here.Anonymous User wrote:T14 school, WE, desired undergrad.
But, in any case, the information you've given is enough. No, don't take the job. Focusing on getting the best grades you can will be better use of your time. There are doors open to someone with decent grades and your background that might not ever open otherwise.

Yeah this is very odd and I've never heard of such a thing. I think you should probably not do it, but it is hard to say. Generally focusing on grades is the most important thing to do.
