Personal appearance in interview
how important are looks in an interview? I am at a t-14, top 20%, without a single offer - but I feel I am very attractive. I thought my looks would make things easier but I feel they are hurting me.

My interviewers have been male. I thought this would be beneficial, but so far it has not.seatown12 wrote:critical question: male or female?

I'm guessing your appearance has had zero effect on your interview success. If you were an extremely attractive male, I could see some male interviewers feeling threatened by that. But I do not see that happening in a male/female match-up.

Re: Personal appearance in interview
this is really not surprising. it is probably hurting you more than it's helping you. a girl who dresses too prettily gives off the message that she's not there to work. during the interview, the interviewer is thinking, man, what a hot chick. but afterwards when he's writing the eval, he's thinking, man, her looks were killer but i dunno how good of a worker she's gonna be...Anonymous User wrote:My interviewers have been male. Re: Personal appearance in interview
I'm another attractive female and I've noticed that female partners are most put off by this. Not surprisingly since women are often more catty. I doubt your appearance will affect any outcome with male interviewers though.
This cycle I noticed I got zero CBs from female screeners even when I thought I rocked the interview. My interview skills are probably ok because I got plenty of CBs from male screeners. Also, I got offers from firms where I was only interviewed by one female but dings from places where I thought I did well but encountered numerous female associates/partners. I'm not saying this amounts to anything but I just thought I'd point it out.

So true. I know if my boobs were only a little bigger, I'd be out every night having rich men buy me drinks instead of grading my students' papers and browsing TLS.shoeshine wrote:Troll...there are no attractive females on TLS.

You sound like one of those girls who don't have any close girlfriends because they're all jealous of you, when actually, you're probably just a bitch.
Yeah...to even pontificate that being an attractive female will make other females not like you is so high school, it's laughable.

Hint: It may have something to do with the fact that our tolerance for bitchiness is directly correlated to the hotness of the girl in question.azntwice wrote:+1. women can also tell when other women are being bitches better than men can tell.GAIAtheCHEERLEADER wrote:lulz.Anonymous User wrote:I'm another attractive female and I've noticed that female partners are most put off by this. For instance, fat girls pretty much always seem bitchy if they say anything negative at all. Hot blondes can basically run me over with their cars before I start to dislike them.

Re: Personal appearance in interview
ok, this is kind of an obnoxious forum but I'll agree that appearances tend to be quite important, generally and among lawyers who think they're important. here's my serious answer: while appearances may hinder your success when insecure or particularly image-obsessed people are the interviewers, being attractive will likely help you a lot once you've already got your foot in the door. That's to say, you'll probably be treated better than the other females as a SA (for effed up and probably lascivious reasons, lamentably). I was afforded opportunities that other SA's werent--I traveled with a partner, went to what seemed like important meetings, and met a client. This wasn't necessarily because I was lucky, and probably wasn't because I was the brightest of the SA's. Generally, getting these opportunities will depend on how you carry yourself, how charismatic you are, how much you allow your looks to intimidate others, and how much you prove that you're more than a face and a body. Being a funny person will help you seem more down to earth, but if you're not funny, just concentrate on being nice and friendly. People tend to like pretty people and often want to assume the best, so the whole "proving you're more than a face" thing isn't terribly difficult if you're smart. And this goes for everyone: making relationships at firms is sometimes based on appearances but more often it's based on personality or common interests. In firm life and in real life, looks are only so interesting, and it's the rest of the package that people ultimately care about.
