Own practice Forum

Most TLS users tend to have the "big law or bust" mentality. I am interested if anyone plans on opening their own practice. Is this even financially practical? Are most small firms owned by attorneys who previously worked in a larger firm or do many fresh LS graduates attempt to open up their own practice. My friends father owns his own small practice and got me wondering.

Use "shingle" - hanging out your own shingle is a phrase people use for starting up your own business. General consensus is that it's probably a bad idea because you wont have clients, will be subject to malpractice suits, won't be able to afford quality legal research tools, and law school generally doesn't prepare you for real practice.
