Who decides which students receive screener interviews?

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Aug 15, 2011 8:54 pm

I had a drop in GPA from one semester to another. I understand the realities of a lowish (1/3 at T30) GPA, however all of the firms interviewing me at OCI saw this prior to extending an interview.

Upon interviewing I found a number of the interviewers appeared to take the interview in a less than serious manner, perhaps realizing how slim my chances should be given their traditional hiring practices and my GPA.

I'm wondering who is making the decisions as to what students receive OCI interviews. Why would these firms give me an interview if their interviewers wont, in my opinion, take it seriously upon seeing my GPA? It wastes everyone's time.

Don't read anything in to an interviewer's demeanor. You have no idea how they behaved in other interviews. Most likely it had nothing to do with you.

It depends on the firm, but often the hiring partner will screen them personally, after an initial cull from the attorney recruiting department (taking out the people who are not in the ballpark). The hiring partner may or may not personally conduct the screener interviews (most do not, especially at larger firms).

It is possible that they agreed to more interview slots than there were candidates they were interested in, but that's not something you can ascertain or concern yourself about. All you can do is put on your best game and hope for the best.

Does your school have lottery picks? If so, do you know if you were a lottery pick?

I had the same feeling at a callback, from the very first set of people I met. Also, they asked me very few questions, further confirming to me that I was dead in the water. It kinda destroyed my confidence for the rest of the day. Been waiting for the rejection letter since...

Unless the interviewer tells you that you don't have a chance you are MAKING A HUGE MISTAKE if you let their demeanor guide you. Some interviewers are having a bad day, dont want to be there, are thinking about other things. In those cases they are just punting the event to you. They are bored but are still going to pick people for callbacks at the end of the day.

It is just another type of challenge in the interview process.

OP here, none of the interviews were lotterys.

I realize it is just my interpretation and I still put my best foot forward. I guess it just gives me a feeling of disappointment afterward.

Thanks for all the comments though.
